ChatGPT Work, Codex, or Standard ChatGPT: How Should You Divide the Work?

First check if the computer can install Codex, then check if the workflow will involve local data, and whether long-term accumulation is needed. Finally, place chatting and image generation into appropriate independent restrictions.

First clarify the limits: Work and Codex share agentic usage

OpenAI currently states that qualified Plus or Pro users, ChatGPT Work and Codex will use the same agentic usage allowance. They are two work entry points, and usage should be viewed together.

General ChatGPT's chatting, files, images, and voice functions have their own limits. OpenAI also states that the image generation limits for ChatGPT do not apply to Codex. This allows me to assign long-term file operations and workflow tasks to Codex, and assign simple chatting or image generation to general ChatGPT as needed.

Important boundary: Separate measurement does not equal official guarantee of double the limit. A more stable statement is that dividing the two independent restrictions can extend the overall working time.
How to choose between ChatGPT Work and Codex
First step: Check if the computer can install Codex.

Why complex work is placed in Codex

The Codex desktop version can use local folders, repository, terminal, and development tools. Adding Skills, Plugins, Apps, and MCP connections based on environment settings, it can place historical data, knowledge base, reference materials, skill packages, and connection tools into the same long-term workflow.

After putting these things together, Codex can first read past data, then execute according to the steps in the skill package, use local tools during the process, and finally write the results and work logs back to the computer. When doing similar work again, it can continue from the accumulated position previously.

The formal name of MCP is Model Context Protocol. It is often spoken as NCP, and the article and illustrations uniformly use MCP.

Computers cannot install Codex, Work can still complete a lot of tasks

Work can be used for research, analysis, and delivery item creation, such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites. It can be placed in a ChatGPT Project, which allows centralized chatting, reference files, and custom commands. If the scheme and workspace settings allow, it can also use Plugins and Skills.

The Work web version runs in the cloud and cannot directly read local folders on the computer. When needing local files, they can be uploaded to the Project; if the data volume is large, the files are continuously changing, or the work requires terminal and repo, Codex's approach would be more suitable.

How I divide the work for visual web pages

  1. Articles, data verification, and web structure are assigned to Codex.
  2. Organize the purpose, ratio, text, and character specifications of each image into image generation prompts.
  3. Let general ChatGPT generate images one by one.
  4. Download the images back to your own computer.
  5. Ask Codex to place the images into the web page, add alternative text, dimensions, compression, and layout.
  6. Finally, check together whether the article, images, mobile version, and files are complete.

This division of labor allows text, web pages, and images to each use their suitable entry point. After the images are completed, they still need to be downloaded and saved manually, then handed over to Codex for integration.

Before starting, ask five questions

  1. Do you want to directly read and write files in the computer's folders? If so, prioritize Codex.
  2. Will the work last for weeks or months and still need to use historical data afterwards? If so, put it into Codex, or at least create a Project.
  3. Do you need terminal, repo, scripts, or multiple tools to run together? If so, prioritize Codex.
  4. The computer cannot install Codex, but still needs to do research and deliverables? Use Work with Project, reference files, and skill packages.
  5. This time is just chatting or generating a lot of images? You can consider general ChatGPT, and reserve agentic usage for complex tasks.
Just remember one sentence: complex integration and long-term knowledge base use Codex, use Work when Codex cannot be installed, and use general ChatGPT for chatting and image generation as needed.

The boundary of this division of labor's capabilities

The functions available for each account depend on the plan, workspace settings, user role, interface, region, and rollout progress. Plugins, Skills, Apps, and MCP also depend on whether the environment has been opened and authorized.
